Many times I find myself trying to troubleshoot via e-mail or over the phone. It can be very frustrating since I cannot see exactly what the user is looking at, nor can I show them what I am talking about. Of course the solution is remote desktop, but for the most part this requires some setup on behalf of the viewer/viewing. Join.me is a great FREE and quick solution to resolving this issue.
Join.me is a self contained website that allows you to engage in free multiple user desktop sharing. Upon navigating to the website you are presented with an option to share your own computer screen or look at some one else’s. Clinking on the share your screen option will download a small installer that you have to run. Once that is set up you will see a floating toolbar appear at the top of your screen with a generated number. Simply pasting that number in an e-mail will let people join your sharing session. You can allow people to control your mouse, you have a phone number provided for audio conferencing, and a chat window to add to the productivity. Lastly once you perform the initial install it gives you the option of creating a desktop shortcut so if you plan on multiple sessions you can simply double click and go.
In terms of being able to troubleshoot quickly this is a really nice quick solution to see exactly what is going on on someone another persons’ computer. Sure there are a lot of options, Skype being the chief among them, but that requires a download, a registration, and configuration just to get a video call going. Personally I’d rather deal with chat than trying to explain to someone how to set up Skype over the phone. Anyway, Join.me is awesome and you should use it!
